The Wrap-Up: Outkast Unexpectedly Ousted By Bad Boy's Dannity Kane
By: SoundSlam Published: Aug. 30, 2006 - New York, NY
Is Bad Boy officially back? Look no further than the top of this week's chart. Puff's singing group of girls, Danity Kane, heads the Billboard list this week with sales of 234K. They take this spot in a week when many expected Outkast to Idlewild-ly rule the chart. However, Big Boi & 3000 come in second, with disappointing first week sales of 196,000 units. Will the fact that this looks like Kast's first brick be enough to actually get them performing TOGETHER again? Who knows?
Elsewhere on the chart, Mrs. Nasty Nas aka Kelis scores her first top ten album. Kelis Was Here bows at #10 with just under 58,000 scanned. Other new entries come from the compilation Crunk Hits Vol. 2 (#48, 18K), an independently released mix CD by DJ Kay Slay and Greg Street (#57, 15K). J. Dilla's posthumous The Shining pops in at #103, with just under 9,000 units scanned.
With the industry going through something of a transitional period, bricks are dropping left and right. The latest hip-hop act to suffer from underwhelming sales is Cali's own Jurassic 5. Long considered a backpacker favorite, their latest album, Feedback, boasts production from Scott Storch as well as cameo from hippie-rock favorites Dave Matthews Band. That hasn't been enough to keep the album from falling out of the Top 100 after only five weeks. To date, this album hasn't even sold 100,000 units, a far cry from their previous albums, which, even though they didn't exactly set the charts on fire, still sold in the respectable 400,000 range.
Next week, look for entries from Method Man (yes, his album is out. You didn't know??) and The Roots (yeah, their album's out too. You didn't know?). What the hell are they DOING over at Def Jam?????!!??!
