D'Angelo Reportedly Moving To J Records
By: SoundSlam Published: Jul. 28, 2005 - New York, NY
D’Angelo, the silky smooth r&b sex symbol with timeless, soulful vocals appears to have been awoken from hibernation. It has become his nature to leave his fans thirsting for the next project while he goes on a musical hiatus of four or five years. However, D’Angelo’s name has re-surfaced again, but this time on two accounts.
First, word hit the streets and airwaves that he would be featured on Common’s “Go” remix, a surprising, but natural fit for the singer. Now, the latest word comes that he may be in the midst of a record label transfer. A close and unidentified source to D’Angelo claims that J Records has acquired his contract from Virgin Records. A J Records spokesman did not respond by deadline to comment on this business move.
D’Angelo last delivered “Voodoo” in 2000, as it went on to push incredible numbers with 1.7 million copies sold. The lead single “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” shot nearly to the top of the charts, airing at number 2 on the Hot R&B/ Hip Hop Charts and number 25 on the Top 100. It was also notorious for the risque and unprecedented video depicting D’Angelo seemingly naked in front of only a black backdrop. Previous to that, his debut album “Brown Sugar”, distributed in 1996, sold roughly the same number with about 1.7 million.
