Soup's On
Artist: DJ Webstar
Interviewer: Brandon Greene
DJ Webstar is the creative force behind the song, "Chicken Noodle Soup," which is starting a new dance sensation. He recently chopped it up with SoundSlam to discuss the dance, the songs, the universal deal, and some of the controversy it's causing. You don't want to miss this interview.
Soundslam: For those who aren't familiar with you can, you tell us a little about yourself?
DJ Webstar: Webstar, CEO of Scrilla Hill Records. We just got a label and distribution deal with Universal. I am the creative force behind the song, "Chicken Noodle Soup." The dance originated in Harlem, we have an artist named Young B who we had make a song for it, and then it just got crazy. People started making their own videos on youtube.com, They started playing the song at the Rucker, DJ Enuff started playing the song on hot 97.5, and then the labels started coming at us.
Soundslam: With Hip Hop often being compared to a modern day Minstrel Show, how do you feel when people describe your dance as reminiscent of the shucking and jiving often acted out by white men in Black face?
DJ Webstar: People fail to realize the kids made this. They are too young to remember that. It's good positive fun. How can you have such negativity towards something fun? We are not out selling drugs or anything, If it's a positive it should always be a plus.
Soundslam: Do you think we as Hip Hoppers have a responsibility to respect historical representations of ourselves when we design our art? You know what they say, if you don't know you're history you are doomed to repeat it.
DJ Webstar: Of course we have to let them know, but these kids don't know. People are looking too deep into the dance. They are not going into this to mock it. I don't think this is going into a negative turn. I think history is repeating itself in a positive way, but a few people have said that in the past two days. I'm only 19, I don't even remember that stuff but I am definitely going to do my research.
Soundslam: What's up with the Universal Deal?
DJ Webstar: They gave us an artist deal and a distribution deal. My album Caught in a Web comes out September 26th. Our idea is to sell a lot of records and set the rest of our artists. It's like being independent but with a huge machine behind you.
Soundslam: What do you want to leave the readers with?
DJ Webstar: I just want everyone to know that there is no negative intent behind this. I don't want people to think I got lucky off one song.
Soundslam: But it was the one song that got you the deal right?
DJ Webstar: The movement was so crazy. I mean we got played in nine major markets, we had two million views on youtube, two thousand people made their own videos. We were #12 in spins in New York. Plus they played like six of our songs for the kids and they went crazy.
Soundslam: Well, we definitely appreciate you interviewing with us and I appreciate you clearing up the whole shuck and jive thing. Good luck with everything.
DJ Webstar: I thank you guys for taking the time to interview me.
